Playday 2008 unwraps the cotton wool from
children's play
3 July 2008
Playday is delighted to announce that the theme
for the 2008 campaign is Give us a go!
Playday, the annual celebration of children’s right to play,
takes place on Wednesday 6 August 2008, and this
year’s theme – Give us a go!
calls for a reverse in the decline in
adventurous play opportunities - be it banning conkers in the
playground or outlawing tree climbing. The campaign highlights the
need for children to experience challenging play to ensure they are
better equipped to manage risk and challenge in their daily
lives.
Becky McLauchlan, Play England campaigns manager said: ‘This
year we want to help children shed some of that cotton wool they’ve
been wrapped up in. Challenging and adventurous play is integral to
children’s development and helps them to grow up as happy and
confident individuals.’
Hundreds of fantastic events will be taking place across the UK
to celebrate Playday. To support this year’s theme, local
communities will be organising adventurous play opportunities, such
as go-kart building, assault courses and tree climbing.
There is still time to organise a Playday event, for more
information on how to get involved visit www.playday.org.uk.
