2009: Make time!

Playday 2009 will be on Wednesday 5 August. We’re pleased to announce the Playday 2009 campaign theme will be: Make time!

What's it all about?

This Playday we're asking everyone to make time for play. From parents, carers and teachers, to policy makers and planners - everyone can make time to protect children’s right to play.

In our busy and overscheduled lives it’s easy to prioritise other things over play, and to think, play is something children just do. As adults, we all need to make time and space to enable children to play freely, and this is what we aim to highlight with the Playday 2009: Make time! campaign.

Thanks to everyone who gave suggestions to our theme consultation. We hope you like the theme we’ve chosen. We also hope it gives you flexibility to adapt for your local needs, to be creative and make it your own if you wish.

Get involved

Playday 2008 was the biggest and best yet, and we really hope you’re able to get involved and make 2009 celebrations even more successful.

Organise a Playday event

On Playday and throughout the summer of 2009, thousands of children, young people and communities will get out and play at hundreds of locally organised events across the UK. Why not organise one in your community?

Over the coming months we will be providing ongoing support to Playday event organisers. Keep an eye out for an updated version of the Get organised! guide, seminars, fliers, web updates and lots more. Check out our resources page for the latest materials.

Now is a good time to start thinking about budgeting for your event, take a look at our funding guidance for ideas of where to start. Many Playday event organisers throughout the UK have told us they arranged their events with surprisingly small budgets (some even at no extra cost!) so don’t let the credit crunch put you off.

There’s a fantastic network of Playday event organisers and supporters to draw help from. Post questions and share funding tips with other Playday event organisers on the Playday online forum for example. Most importantly, ask everyone you know and work with to make time for Playday 2009, together we can raise the profile of children’s right to play.
