PLAYDAY 2011: THE NATIONAL DAY FOR
PLAY

Playday is the national day for
play in the UK, a celebration of children’s right to play and a
campaign that highlights the importance of play in children’s
lives.
To celebrate Playday 2011 on Wednesday
3 August we asked everyone to make an extra special
effort so children could play. Hundreds of communities
across the UK put on over 520 local Playday events and activities.
In addition, thousands of children, young people and their families
marked the occasion by simply getting out to play!
It’s easy to celebrate Playday - it doesn’t
matter whether your plans are big or small, what’s most important
is that children and young people get the opportunity to get out to
play for the day, and that collectively we highlight the importance
of play in children’s lives.
Playday 2011: The National day for
play
In recent years, the national Playday campaign
had an annual theme on a specific issue affecting children’s play.
For Playday 2011, we did things a bit differently, rather than
have a specific theme we focussed on all aspects of why play is
important. We simply called on everyone to celebrate
the national day for play in whatever way
they could, to help strengthen our call to protect children’s right
to play.
Campaigning for play
Playday is ultimately about having fun, and it
can also make a huge difference for children in your community.
Play England continually makes the case
for play on a national level so that children can play not just on
Playday, but all year round. Playday event organisers also use the
Playday campaign to:
- Fight cuts to play funding
- Press for local improvements to play
- Save a local play space
- Encourage your community to work together to support play
