Arts and crafts, loose parts, traditional games and open acces play activities
In praise of pollinators with Lordy Bird and Polly Nator. Our ecosystems are very precious and are sustained by millions of hardworking pollinators. To celebrate the launch week of our new playground on playday, Lordy Bird and Polly Nator will bring a hive of activity to the playground. Our pollination play will explain how the food we eat makes it from farm to fork, with the help of some little heroes. A bug hunt trail around the playground will help children discover the new space and understand the wide range of creatures that play an important part in the process! Along with this Timberplay will be offering activities to work with nature including oragami making to sail boats in water streams, natural wand making, vegetable sculpturing and wooden animal making.
Celebrate the refurbishment of Riverside View Play Area with a free play and arts event.

Sculpture and Play.
Yelena’s work is inspired by nuclear history. Yelena was born in the USSR in a closed town where the first soviet nuclear reactor produced plutonium necessary for the realisation of the soviet atomic bombs. During her residency at The Art House, Wakefield in May 2018 her practice took a participatory turn. Inspired by the story of Klaus Fuchs, a ‘nuclear spy’ imprisoned in Wakefield, she developed a new game, ‘Townlets’ . The game combines a split image of a plutonium atom and the traditional Russian game of Gorodki.
Visitors are encouraged to play and arrange elements into balancing ‘figures’ and to knock them down with the plucks sliding on the floor. Through this balancing game, Popova questions the competetive nature of politics and sport, also strives to suggest more collaborative approaches to playing.
This game has also recently been taken to swimming pools across the Wakefield District to become a floating sculpture set for a propositional sycronised swimming performance entitled Her Name is Prometheus.
